Maria Olano | FNC’s Impact on the Future of Colombian Coffee
As we delve deeper into the world of coffee, certain narratives shape the landscape with their rich histories and innovative futures. One such story lies within the Colombian coffee industry, led by the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia (FNC). In a recent episode of The Cupping Table by M-Cultivo, an enlightening conversation with Maria Alejandra Olano, Senior Coffee Trader for the FNC, shed light on the complexities and future of Colombian coffee.
A Storied Legacy
Founded in 1927, the FNC has evolved into more than just a coffee trading entity—it is the backbone of Colombian coffee culture and commerce. As Maria explains, FNC operates as a multi-dimensional organization, serving as traders, producers, roasters, and café operators. With over 650 Juan Valdez shops worldwide, with Buencafé one of the leading suppliers of instant coffee in the world, FNC showcases the diverse portfolio of Colombian coffee and ensures that value-added processes such as roasting and transformation remain within the country.
Transformative Research & Consistency

A key pillar of FNC’s efforts is research conducted by its scientific arm, CENICAFE, which focuses on sustainability, productivity, and resilience to challenges such as coffee leaf rust. Thanks to decades of investment in research, 88% of Colombia’s coffee farms now grow rust-resistant varieties. This proactive approach ensures a consistent and high-quality coffee supply, which has made Colombian coffee a global benchmark.
The Strategy of Specialty

Maria underscores the importance of specialty coffee as the pathway to profitability for Colombian coffee growers. Despite market volatility, the FNC remains committed to fostering specialty coffee through differential pricing strategies that benefit both producers and buyers. Programs like Craft Coffees create direct relationships between growers and roasters, ensuring that high-quality lots are rewarded with premium payments.
Innovation in Auctions
One of the most significant innovations of the FNC is the Colombia Land of Diversity Auction, which celebrates its 10th version this year. This prestigious auction spotlights Colombia’s finest coffees, selected by international buyers and cupped at events around the world—including in Shanghai and Amsterdam. By fostering direct connections between producers and buyers, these auctions enhance the transparency and value of Colombian coffee on the global stage.
Looking Ahead
Maria expresses optimism about the future, noting the increasing number of potential coffee drinkers worldwide and the unique flavor profiles Colombia offers. She envisions continued advancements in farming techniques, market access, and value chain transparency to ensure long-term sustainability.
