My coffee producer story began in 2009 when I was just 18 years old. Together with my father, we had the vision of becoming specialty coffee producers, despite the fact that at that time, the majority of production was focused on conventional coffee. We believed that our microclimate was privileged for producing high-quality beans.
We started by processing small quantities of fruit in a modest and improvised processing unit, with limited water and little experience. That's how the batches of honey and semi-honey coffee from our farms, La Mesa and El Alto, emerged. We sun-dried them, a method we continue to use to this day. Soon, our coffee profile became known in countries like the United States and Japan.
One of the biggest challenges I faced as a coffee producer was in the beginning when it wasn't common to grow coffee at an altitude higher than 1900 meters above sea level. The management and nutrition were very different, and the process of establishing new plants was slower compared to farms located in lower areas. However, we always maintained hope of achieving great quality and implemented shade in our plantations to improve the ecosystem.
The story of our farm goes back 25 years when my parents acquired it with the savings from a grocery business. My father, who worked on other farms, brought his experience in agriculture to contribute. He dedicated himself to this work from a young age and passed on his knowledge to our farm.
What sets me apart as a coffee producer is my passion for making my way in this industry from a young age. I am motivated to be an inspiration to other young people who want to engage in this activity and be part of a generational change that ensures the continuity of coffee. Furthermore, I seek to innovate and constantly improve, staying informed about market trends without losing the unique identity of my coffee. To achieve this, I adopt a more technical and precise approach in each stage of production, balancing productivity and ecology in our farms.
My core values and principles as a coffee producer are based on establishing long-term relationships that strengthen sustainability throughout the production chain. From the workers on the farm to the roasters on the other side of the world, I value loyalty, dedication, respect, and trust. These values are key to achieving a sustainable and enriching activity for everyone involved.
On our farm, we have implemented a special program to support the local community and improve the living conditions of our employees. We offer an additional payment of up to 50% above the regulated price for coffee pickers as an incentive for harvesting quality beans. We also cover transportation expenses from their region in Panama, provide housing, clean water, beds, and electricity for their comfort during the harvest season.
In the future, I have big dreams and goals for my farm. One of my greatest desires is to establish a genetic breeding laboratory that allows us to strengthen our knowledge about the coffee varieties we currently produce. We aspire to introduce new and improved seed lots, with the goal of enhancing the quality of our beans in each harvest. We want to be present in the best coffee competitions worldwide and gain recognition for the excellence of our products.
Furthermore, my vision extends beyond my farm. I want to be a driving force in the coffee industry, promoting sustainable and ethical practices. I believe in the importance of establishing strong and long-term relationships with all actors in the production chain. I want to contribute to strengthening sustainability for both the farm workers and the roasters and consumers worldwide. I want my coffee to be a source of pride and satisfaction, both for those who cultivate it and those who enjoy it in their cup.
In summary, my journey as a coffee producer is driven by passion, dedication, and a constant pursuit of excellence. I started this path at a young age, inspired by my father and with the conviction of being an inspiration to other young people. Through innovation and continuous improvement, we strive to stay at the forefront of the industry without losing our identity. We value our workers and strive to provide them with dignified living and working conditions. With a long-term vision, we aim to leave a lasting legacy in the coffee industry and contribute to the growth and sustainability of this beloved activity.
Overall, my story as a coffee producer is a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. Starting at a young age, inspired by my father, I embarked on this journey to make a difference in the coffee world. Through sustainable practices, innovative approaches, and a commitment to fostering strong relationships, I aim to create a positive impact on the lives of those involved in the coffee industry, from farm to cup.
