Rancho Momokiemo is located in the municipality of Coapilla, in the Sierra Norte of Chiapas, Mexico, at an altitude of 1480 meters above sea level. It is situated in a region inhabited by the Zoque ethnic group, surrounded by a pine forest, and known for extensive livestock farming and the cultivation of corn and beans. Our place of origin is unique and special, graced by a beautiful lagoon known as "Laguna Verde" and surrounded by pine-covered hills. The history of Momokiemo began in 2019 as an agroecological initiative to change land use, transitioning from producing monocultures like corn and beans to cultivating coffee under an agroforestry system. This was part of the Mexican government's "Sembrando Vida" program. Before this transformation, the parcel was used for extensive grazing and the cultivation of basic grains. In 2019, the first coffee plants of the Marsellesa and Costa Rica 95 varieties were established, in association with native plants like Heliocarpus spp. (majahua or jonote), Inga spp. (chelel, jinicuil), Musa paradisiaca L. (bananas), Pinus spp. (ocote), Diphysa americana (guachipilín), Eysenhardtia polystachya (taray), and crops like Manihot esculenta (cassava), corn, and beans. Rancho Momokiemo, like 200 other parcels in the municipality of Coapilla, Chiapas, is a small coffee producer's farm, where we use family labor for various productive activities. We produce specialty coffee under agroecological management, employing low-impact techniques on the environment, using bio-inputs like bocashi, bioles, and legumes to nourish our soils. Additionally, the plants are planted on contour lines to protect the soil and water. Our production unit is an act of love for nature, because we care for it, and it provides us with food. Twelve years ago, coffee farmers in our municipality stopped cultivating coffee due to low prices and the high incidence of rust disease, switching their coffee plantations for livestock farming and forest exploitation. But today, through the implementation of agroforestry, we have fought to be recognized and known worldwide that a new way of producing is possible. The efforts of us small producers should be reflected in our economy, for being guardians of the forest and producing quality food for the world. We offer special coffee, produced with agroecological management, selective harvesting, processed with clean water using traditional methods, dried on concrete patios, and stored in airtight bags.
