FINCA AQUIARES
Nestled 7 kilometers from Turrialba, Aquiares Coffee Estate stands as the largest single-block coffee plantation in Costa Rica. Covering 924 hectares, 80% of the estate is dedicated to coffee cultivation, while the remaining 20% is lush forest, creating a unique balance between agriculture and natural preservation.
Founded in 1890 by the British Lindo family, Aquiares has a rich history of coffee production, having evolved through the stewardship of several families, including a period of ownership by former Costa Rican President José Figueres. Today, it is managed by three families, with the Robelo family overseeing daily operations.
Aquiares means "land between rivers" in the indigenous Huetar language, aptly named for the three rivers that define and nourish the estate: the Aquiares, Turrialba, and Jesús María. These water sources, along with 32 natural springs and two waterfalls, are crucial, not only for coffee production but also for providing water to the nearby village and four other communities.
The estate's coffee is cultivated at elevations ranging from 800 to 1400 m.a.s.l., benefiting from fertile volcanic soils and a stable tropical climate. These conditions, combined with the shade of over 50,000 trees planted since 2003, enhance the coffee's quality by allowing slower maturation, which results in richer flavors and higher quality beans. The diverse ecosystem, home to over 300 bird species, small mammals, and reptiles, reflects Aquiares' commitment to environmental sustainability.
Aquiares is more than just a coffee estate; it is a vibrant community. The village, home to 1,800 residents and surrounded by coffee fields, has a strong interdependence with the estate. The estate employs 150 locals, supporting 150 families, making it the main economic driver of the community. Since the 1990s, workers have been able to purchase their homes, fostering a deep connection and commitment to both the estate and the village.
Coffee & Community since 1890 – this slogan encapsulates the essence of Aquiares, where over a century of coffee-growing expertise meets a strong, supportive community. For those seeking premium, sustainably produced coffee with a rich heritage, Aquiares Coffee Estate offers an unparalleled experience.
