Finca El Ángel was acquired by Rafael Jr. in December of 2022. We had been working at the mill with this farm from 2022 to 2023. This farm was acquired by the Mathies family in 2016. It was only land, no coffee being produced before, and they started cleaning up the land and planting coffee trees focusing 100% on specialty coffee varieties in 2018. 2021-2022 was its first harvest and the 2022-2023 harvest was its second. This farm is located high in the Santa Ana volcano, land which is very commonly known for its unique cup quality and characteristics. The 5 varieties it currently has are the ones that will continue being conserved in this farm.

I have grown a deep love for coffee. I don’t see myself doing anything else other than coffee for the rest of my life. I have wanted my very own farm for some time now but have been really patient in looking for it. I spent 5 years visiting different farms looking for the right qualities I desired and needed for my first farm. I wanted the challenge of producing coffee and managing my own farm. I’ve taken care of my father’s farms for some time now. But wanted to truly take on the challenge on my own.

El Ángel is located on a very prestigious coffee producing area of the country. It is literally on a volcano in Santa Ana. Part of the farm overlooks the Santa Ana city and part of the farm overlooks the Coatepeque Lake. The climate here is much more different than what we are used to in our other farms. The climate here is hotter and drier with huge ups and downs in temperature throughout the day. This, along with the volcanic soils rich in minerals, helps provide the cup profile with its unique quality and characteristics.

El Ángel has been wondering us with its very unique cup characteristics for the past harvests and has never let us down. Keep an eye out in the years to come as new varieties will shortly be introduced into this farm (Sidra and Caturra Chiroso).
